"These maps are updated based on better technology, better data to more accurately define the risk," says Molly Williams who is the Storm Water Utilities Manager for Sarasota County.
Williams is one of many people working on creating new flood maps for Sarasota County. The current maps are upwards of 30 years old and in most cases do not accurately show who is at risk of flooding and who isn't.
Where's the story?3 Points Mentioned
"Most residents will find that they are not in a flood zone, but there are those residents who will see that they are in or adjacent to some of the parcels that are going into the flood zone."
For you to find out if you're in the zone, the county has created an online interactive map.
"That makes it a lot easier for residents to identify where their parcel is in relation to the preliminary firm map."
To access the map go to the Sarasota County Government website, scgov.net, once there you can click on flood map updates and type in your address. The county says don't get ahead of yourself though, the maps aren't done yet.
"We are working diligently and as quickly as we can to update the rest of the areas, bringing them up to the proper data set so that they could be included in the FEMA firm maps."
The process has not been a quick one and some within the county have expressed concern.
"Being able to be as accurate as we can with the technology, making sure that the risk is properly depicted we want to be sure that we don't loose that accuracy."
The county has held several public meetings to hear residents concerns, they had such large turn outs they plan on holding more. To be specific, February 24th, 4-7 pm in Sarasota at the Community Bayfront Center. March 4th 4-7pm at the Venice Community Center. March 12th at the Morgan Family Community Center in North Port. The final meeting will be at the Englewood Sports Complex on April 9th.
